MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A., 1993 FEB 20 (NB) -- Sunsoft is
proud to present its new strategic investment in network technology.
The next version of the Solaris (TM) operating system will feature a
new revolutionary networking programming interface, based on the PSTN
metaphor. The new interface called "plugs" (TM) will provide the same
functionality with the Berkeley-derived socket interface, but offer an
improved user interface and OSI compatibility. Sunsoft's network
products development manager Mr. R. F. Cable described the new
product's main goal as an enhancement of programmer productivity. He
also commented that old applications written using the previous
interface could be relatively easy ported to the new technology. This
is the reason for not providing compatibility libraries, he added.

Main highlight of the interface is the new plug(2) system call which is
used to create communication endpoints. Tying a name to a plug is
achieved using the tie(2) function call. Initiating a plug call is
done with the dial(2) call, while the other end has to use the
complementary pick-up(2) call. Other function calls are the
getplugname(2), getplugopt(2), chat(2), and plugpair(2).
